Select your Mac's hard drive from the drop-down menu next to 'Copy.' Select the external hard drive from the drop-down menu next to 'to.' Make sure Backup - all files is selected in the drop-down menu next to 'using' (Backup - user files does not create a bootable clone). For offsite backup, you can keep one disk image backup in your rotation at a different address, or subscribe to Backblaze (50/year) or iDrive (52.12/year) for cloud backup. Create regular weekly disk image backups of your drive using an app like Carbon Copy Cloner (39.99) or Get Backup Pro (19.99). There are two main Mac options for creating bootable backups: Super Duper and Carbon Copy Cloner. Our crowd-sourced lists contains more than 25 apps similar. You can technically use Disk Utility to copy your entire hard drive, but the result will not be bootable on an external drive. The best Carbon Copy Cloner alternatives are Rescuezilla, Clonezilla and EaseUS Partition Master.
